  • “COVID, from a marketing standpoint, is giving a lot of people a new opportunity and it is definitely helping people to re-prioritize their ads and their budgets and where they are putting those.” -Jon“From an SEO perspective, after being scared to death and not knowing what we would see, what we have seen is there are a few industries that had been hit heavily. Travel searches, leisure stuff, restaurants, and hotels are down. That said, almost every other category is up. Finance, marketing, consumer goods, and retail are up. We’re seeing more searches and I think it’sbecause people have more time and they have to come up with new ways of entertaining themselves because they’re not getting out as much and this has led to what I think is a great opportunity for people to rank and show up where people are looking.” -Jon“One of the things that the team and I are working earlier on when COVID started to hit was if you’re a brand and you’re doing okay, now is actually a fantastic opportunity to put more into digital because people are going to be looking.” -Jon“There are a lot of companies and still a lot of companies that had a great opportunity but yes, the competition is more fierce for some industries. Some people really grabbed that opportunity and went all in. They produced more content.” -Jon“One thing I want to say, we keep talking about content and I would give everybody a great tip right here. Don’t produce as much new content, make your content longer and better.” -Jon“I do think that content editing and revision is something that’s very important from an SEO perspective. I think that when we’re in this post COVID world and the dollars are a bit more precious, people are more hesitant to lean on performance marketing then all of a sudden its, ‘Great. How do I get good at SEO and how do I start showing value quickly.” -Ben “If your competition is producing more content, then let’s talk technical SEO for a hot minute. Is your website faster? Is it easier to navigate on a mobile phone? These are things that are actually pretty doable andyou don’t need tons of content to make that happen.” -Jon“The next thing is that the content that you do already have, check if it’s up to par. Is it as good as what’s on the first page? Is it answering the questions? Those are the first two things that you need to do and then you can move on.” -Jon“The third one would be creating new content and the fourth one would be getting people to link back your content, to get people to talk about your content, reference your content as something that is worth reading.” -Jon“There’s a notion of domain authority and having a high volume of content is a signal that Google thinks that you’re taking SEO and you’re a serious business because to be able to produce a lot of content, you probably have a general understanding of the subject matter you are talking about. It’s hard to produce that much dribble. On the flip side, if you don’t have the facilities to produce a massive amount of content, you need to be able to show Google that you’re an influencer or anauthority in your space and that really gets into building your reputation and building your domain authority.” -Jon“In building domain authority, get on to some forums, or online groups that maybe talk about your product or service and actually engage with them regularly and only drop to your product every now and then. You have to be active in the forum and not just go and use it to try and post links.” -Jon“We can see the authenticity or the lack thereof, we’re now a lot better at snooping that out. For example, if I see that somebody is actually posted multiple answers or they’ve said multiple things, they’ve been helpful and I’m in the forum every day so I see who is posting and who is talking. And I also see the ones who just go there to tell me to check out something and especially when it’s usually not relevant, doesn’t fit into the conversation and you can tell exactly what it is.” -Jon“The other thing that you can do is that, if you are producing content, if you are producing things, produce it for other people and then reference your own content or your own website as the source of the information that you’re writing about.” -Jon“Find other forums, not just websites that are in the circle of what you’re talking about and see if you can be helpful and informative to their audience. You will get far more out of your effort if you attach that helpfulness and that authenticity to it than if you just go out and post links.” -Jon“I think that you posting your own links has a limited capacity. You have to put them in a place where they can actually provide utility.” -Ben “Influencer marketing is one of those things where a lot of people have got it wrong and they just misunderstand it. This is an example of good influencer marketing. Youhave a fantastic audience that likes and listens to marketing advice and that is looking for it. It makes perfect sense to me that as an SEO of my company would want to sponsor your show, be a guest on your show, so I can be in front of those people who are looking for help with marketing.” -Jon“I do think there’s value in leveraging influencer marketing to help boost SEO and your organic growth efforts. If you can work with someone that has an audience, you can talk to people who are influencers in your existing network, see the people that you already have relationships with that are relevant, and ask them to work with you. Give them your products or services and have talk them talk about it.” -Jon“In this new world, if you have been neglecting yourSEO, you need to get back to it. That’s my first tip. Our world has changed. Work from home is going to be a thing, we might have a blend situation but people are going to be searching more. That has gone up every year anyway but this year especially and in subsequent years so make it a priority again. You will thank me in a year and a half.” -Jon
